What a downspout does

A gutter system has two essential parts: the gutter and the downspouts. The gutter is the channel along the roofline, sloped so rainwater gathers in it and flows downward. Downspouts are the vertical pipes that carry that water away from the house.

The whole system is made to ensure rainwater and snow melt don’t damage the roof, walls, the foundation of the building, and the landscape around it. Our standard downspout size is 2″×3″, and we can special order 3″×4″ downspouts upon request.

Where downspouts should go

A gutter system only works if the downspouts are in the right places. It’s essential that water doesn’t gather on or too close to the house, so no part of it is damaged by moisture and mold.

The general rules

  • One downspout for every 40 feet of gutter, so no downspout takes in too much water.
  • Empty at least 10 feet from the house, by relocating the downspout or adding an extension.
  • Where neither works, lead the water into the municipal storm sewer or an underground pipe.
  • Check the slope of the ground so water doesn’t run back toward the house.

Extensions and flip-up hinges

Without extensions, downspouts can create big puddles of mud around your home, erode the lawn, flood basements or crawl spaces and even crack the foundation. Extensions come in many shapes and sizes to suit your needs.

We offer flip up hinges that can be installed on your downspouts. Velcro tabs keep the extension up when raised and fastened, so it can be flipped up and out of the way for mowing and landscaping.
